描述
Taku Sakaushi is increasingly becoming a reference point when talking seriously about new interests in Japanese architecture, be it social consciousness, reuse of buildings, or ecology. One of the qualities of his architecture derives from this interest in the public aspect of architecture.
His buildings always recognize an outside to relate to, consciously, and some of his projects are based precisely in this sort of connection. This is not quite as common in the Japanese context as it may sound. Two other qualities are a basso continuo running throughout his works.
This monograph collects 20 years in the career of this Japanese architect. 264 pages of works and reflections, photographs, plans and details, and with texts by Enric Massip, David Stewart, Shunsuke Kuwahara, Diego Grass, Manabu Chiba and Shinichi Takiguchi.
One is the lightness of the spaces and volumes he designs. Maybe it would be be¬ er to call it clarity, in its various senses, even though some spaces are intricate.
Another one is the tactile quality of his interiors and exteriors. They are textured, either materially or by color, and frequently defined by slanted walls. His projects aim at achieving a space that is not just perceived, understood or emotionally compelling, but that is physically demanding a reaction from the user: moving about, caressing the walls, going up the stairs, crouching on the floor. Sensing.
