ABSTRACT
The shrine complex of cAbd al-Samad at Natanz, built in the first decade of the eighth/fourteenth century, is one of the most stunning architectural ensembles remaining from medieval Iran. It is also one of the best documented, for its fifteen extant inscriptions allow us to identify the web of people involved in its creation, to document the types of buildings incorporated in the complex, and to trace the development of architectural techniques and styles used in the period. In short, the complex at Natanz provides a model for studying the development of shrine complexes in Mongol Iran.
