Within a period of six years, the Hamburg firm of Gerkan, Marg, and Partners-gmp, for short-has completed over one hundred designs for clients in China. Five of these are already finished and twenty are currently under construction or in the planning stages. Preeminent is Lingang New City, a planned harbor city for 800,000 inhabitants close to Shanghai. Conceived by gmp in the tradition of ideal cities, the various neighborhoods were arranged in concentric rings around an artificial circular lake. Urban elements and spaces fulfill different communal functions while giving the plans an identity: a theater, an opera house, a school, a museum, a city archive, a church, office towers, and convention centers larger than twenty soccer fields put together.
