roofs
In the days when city flâneurs still approached buildings from a pedestrian’s perspective, the facade was considered the face of a house that gave it its identity. The roof, which can hardly be seen, was secondary; its importance was to be rehabilitated with the designation of the fifth facade. At the latest after the introduction of Google Earth and the increasing spread of camera drones, this understanding has reversed. Today, the vertical view, i.e. the roof, is often the first impression we have of buildings.
In the current issue we show less spectacular examples that have one thing in common: They are in the context of historical roofs. The cantilevered wooden roof by Dietrich Untertrifaller crouches in the landscape within sight of the Munich Olympic tent, as does the extension of the Sydney Modern art museum in Sanaa with a view of the opera by Jørn Utzon. Both simple yet distinctive flat roofs are easy to find on Google Earth. But they show their real quality on the inside: light, freshness and generosity.
