Sicily, the largest of the islands in the Mediterranean Sea, has always been a land of great charm for its landscapes and marvelous architecture, among the favorite destinations for travelers on the Grand Tour. Its lighthouses, among the most numerous and extraordinary, belong to a varied patrimony of signals under the Command of the Lighthouse Area of Sicily. Towers, bastions, castles, tuna traps and then islands, islets, reefs, rocks, ports and beaches: these are the architectures and landscapes that host the Sicilian lighthouses. They are entrusted with the security of two seas, the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian, which meet along the Strait of Messina. This fourth (and last?) volume, according to editorial forecasts, concludes the first and only series dedicated to Italian lighthouses. Among the approximately 155 main Italian lighthouses, Sicily represents many, more than a quarter; there are numerous ones that present singularity and uniqueness, erected to guard stretches of coast where nature writes its own laws and which become easy prey to the winds, the sea and neglect. Traveling along the Sicilian coasts, one is breathless being able to appreciate only in part their characteristics, sometimes jagged, uncertain, with large and frequent inlets (along the Tyrrhenian coast) rather than low and sandy ones (along the western coast). The reader (and the traveler) is offered an itinerary, a journey and a long and discontinuous dream due to the need to meet even the most isolated ones.
