Materials such as wood and straw have been incorporated into homes and shelters for centuries; it is only since industrialisation that the global construction industry has turned to concrete, metal and plastic, and powerful lobbies have formed around their promotion. With plants pushed to the periphery, the intricate web of connections between human and plant life has been obscured and begun to unravel. From cultivation to construction, this month’s AR looks at spaces for plants, such as gardens, greenhouses and parks, and argues bio-based materials are integral to the future of building, whether it is with fibres woven into roofs and facades or unruly stems coerced into processed panels and standardised parts.
