The tree is a heavy symbol. When we plant a tree, we think of the old tree that gave us the seed, we think of the cycles of life we are cultivating and of the good that will outlive us when we die. The tree can turn from object to ornament, resource to material; its meanings and stories stretch beyond the known natural lifecycle of the tree and into literature we read, the art we consume and the streets we walk. The AR October issue considers that full lifecycle, from planting to growing to cutting, and beyond. Since trees are seen as more valuable dead than alive, we also question the extent to which timber is co-opted to exacerbate, rather than counter, the climate catastrophe. This issue features projects by Terunobu Fujimori, Kéré Architecture, Studio Anna Heringer, Abari, CAUKIN Studio, Mars Architectes, Rizvi Hassan, Heatherwick Studio and contributions by Sebastião Salgado, Sophie Sapp Moore, Ali Karimi, and many, many more.
