As the need to find alternatives to short-sighted or heavily consumptive traditions of constant new construction becomes increasingly urgent, we turn our attention to strategies of adaptive reuse with the AR New into Old awards, examining how buildings can be given a new lease of life and celebrating the creative ways they have been remodelled to welcome contemporary uses. This year, we sent critics to projects in Iran, Ireland, Japan, the US and the UK before our judges selected ZAV Architects’ Farsh Film Studio as the winner.

We also look to those who tear up the existing conditions to imagine and create new modes of practice, collaboration and being. Collage is used across art, architecture, text and film to communicate ideas and create new ones. David Campany writes: ‘To make a collage is always part catharsis and part allegory – a way of dealing with the world on your own terms, whether celebration, criticism or estrangement’. For this issue, we rifled through our own cutting room floor, as the AR editorial team all took to tearing up the Waste issue (AR June 2021) in loving destruction of our most recent creation. The front cover, by Lili Zarzycki, re-assembles parts of this issue’s aptly-themed predecessor with paint and tape, while Emily Post finds new meanings in old words in her assemblage from our June headlines, in the folio image accompanying the editorial. As is always the case at the AR, themes and imagery re-surface to riff off our past and continue old conversations; the monogram on this issue’s back cover was designed in reference to historical AR covers.
