Featured on the cover of the June issue, Edward Burtynsky’s Shipbreaking series depicts the bitter end of the invisible tool of global capitalism. The fleets of ships that transport commodities to ports the world over and return with tonnes of waste will one day become part of the debris too. ‘As fast and as furiously as we construct urban conglomerates, as speedily as we lay waste to our environments, as earnestly as we attempt to clean up, organise and innovate, we rapidly make things worse’ writes Hélène Frichot in the keynote for this issue. This issue seeks to mine the mountain of waste for newness and pick opportunities out from the debris. From Kurt Schwitters to Sammy Baloji, from waste management in Beirut to Chicago’s wasted space, and from landfills to the global commons: waste is an end and a beginning.
