This is a special issue that highlights urban proposal that Nikken Sekkei have and had been involved in over half a century since the 1960s (including other companies’ projects in site plans). Nikken Sekkei have contributed to the urban policies and plans, but also sought to enrich the experience of life in the city through concrete projects. Each project presented challenges that were met through innovations and understanding. In many cases, they required a long-term commitment involving revisions to the plan and reconciliation of conflicting interests among stakeholders. From the initial planning stage through the final operating stage, the ability to adjust a project while moving it forward it vital. The projects introduced in this volume are examples of the results Nikken Sekkei have achieved. They reflect a variety of approaches, from activities addressing the dynamic expression of the city to activities addressing the actions of people who shape the city.
