Published on the occasion of the exhibition “Paris d’hospitalité” at the Pavillon de l’Arsenal, June 19 – September 9, 1999. To expose hospital architecture in Paris, is to show not only the complex links between the city and its hospitals since the 13th century to the present day, but also to discover the new architectural style that has transformed the hospital structures for the past ten years; a hospital architecture that rejects specialization to open itself to all influences. This book shows how the evolution of social attitudes, technology and population has allowed the hospital to open itself onto the city, and encouraged the development of new urban styles at the very heart of hospital groups. In the last ten year, the ambitious architectural policies of the Assistance publique (Public Assistance) have put hospitals at the center of the contemporary debate on the city.
