No English county is without its share of nonconformist chapels. Some stand proudly and triumphantly proclaiming their message in an architectural language of unrestrained vigour, many hide themselves from the world down country lanes or seek the urban solitude of back yards and unfashionable streets. Grand meeting-houses of the 17th century, sedate Georgian chapels and little redbrick ‘Bethels’ are reminders of a freedom of religious expression that is an essential part of the English heritage.
Variety in design and materials, with the traditions of vernacular building well to the fore, make the study of nonconformist chapels and meeting-houses essential to a full understanding of English building.
