Karla Black’s sculptures have a defiant force. In their raw physicality they are demanding and disruptive as well as beautiful and inspiring. Resolutely abstract, the materials reject figuration. As art, these objects make space for the viewer by prioritising an experience in the immediacy of the present moment. Published on the occasion of Black’s exhibition at Fruitmarket, Edinburgh, this book combines a selection of sculptures made since 2001 with newly commissioned site-specific works: hanging and low-lying three-dimensional volumes of sugar paper, cardboard, polystyrene, cellophane, and net, embellished with the artist’s signature powders, pastes, and gels.
