In the 1980s Nouvel achieved sudden international fame with his building for the Institute du Monde Arabe in Paris. Now it can be seen as the prelude to an astonishing opening-out — a series of buildings representing new vistas of research in the 1990s. The four projects features in this book — Dumont-Schauberg headquarters and Mediapark in Cologne, Victoria Building in Frankfurt, Galeries Lafayette in Berlin — represent Nouvel’s current fascination with image technology, with dematerialising built forms using reflection, refraction and transparency, combined with explorations of the themes of tension, interface and virtuality.
