This updated hardback reprint of Croquis is dedicated to the work of Paris-based architects Lacaton & Vassal. Covering more than two decades of work, it gives special consideration not only to their methodology and ideals as these have matured through the years, through critical analysis by Arnoldo Rivkin and Juan Hereros and an interview with the architects, but also to an extensive selection of exemplary projects. Among the 26 featured works are the Nantes School of Architecture, FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, Guangzhou Museum, Le Grand Sud Polyvalent Theater in Lille, housing projects in Paris, Saint Nazaire, Mulhouse, and Bordeaux, plus several private residences.

 

Special reissue, revised and enlarged, of the number 177/178 of El Croquis dedicated to the work of the French architecture office Lacaton & Vassal . In addition to the texts, works and projects already published in the previous monograph, this Comprehensive Volume  includes:
-Updating the Transformation of 530 Homes in Bordeaux and the 96 homes in Chalon Sur Saône,  with new photographs of the completed works.
– A new work: 59 Houses in the Neppert Gardens
– A new project: Mixed Use Building in Chêne-Bourg .  

Biography

Anne Lacaton & Jean Philippe Vassal

Anne Lacaton was born in Saint Pardoux la Rivière, France, in 1955. She graduated from the Bordeaux School of Architecture in 1980, and obtained a diploma in Urban Planning from the University of Bordeaux in 1984. She has been visiting professor at the Polytechnic School of Lausanne (2004, 2006 and 2010-2011), the Harvard GSD Studio Kenzo Tange in Paris (2010-2011), the University of Florida (2012), the University of Buffalo-New York (2013) and the Neuflize OBC Pavilion at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2013-2014). She is currently a visiting professor at the Madrid School of Architecture since 2007, and teaches classes at the Harvard GSD.

Jean Philippe Vassal was born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1954. He graduated from the Bordeaux School of Architecture in 1980. He worked as an urban planner in Niger from 1980 to 1985. He has been Professor at the UdK in Berlin since 2012, and has been visiting professor at the Bordeaux School of Architecture (1992-1999), the Versailles School of Architecture (2002-2006), the Peter Behrens School of Architecture in Dusseldorf (2005), the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (2010-2011), the University Berlin Technique (2007-2010) and the Neuflize OBC Pavilion at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2013-2014).

Anne Lacaton and Jean Philippe Vassal created the Lacaton & Vassal office  in 1989, based in Paris – active in France and abroad – and focused on the construction of buildings and the development of urban planning programs. All his projects are based on principles of generosity and economy, placed at the service of life, uses and occupation, with the aim of changing the established rates.
