The magazine presents an overview of eight years in the evolution of David Chipperfield’s practice, leading up to his receiving the Pritzker Prize in 2023. A conversation with Marina Tabassum and the architect adds insightful details to this examination of Chipperfield’s practice and recent work.

 

Sir David Chipperfield —CH, CBE, RA, RDI, RIBA, BDA—was born in London in 1953. He studied at the Kingston School of Art and the London Architectural Association before founding his own practice in 1985. He has developed a design methodology used in its five offices: London, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Santiago de Compostela.

David Chipperfield is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the Bund Deutscher Architekten. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004, a Royal Designer for Industry in 2006, and a Fellow of the Royal Academy in 2008. Among the awards he has received are the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2009 and Knighthood (Sir) for services to architecture in the UK and Germany in 2010. In 2011, he received the RIBA’s Royal Gold Medal for Architecture, and in 2013, the Art Association’s Praemium Imperiale from Japan. David Chipperfield was made a Member of the UK Order of the Companions of Honor in 2021,

In addition to design work, David Chipperfield has given classes and lectures around the world in architecture schools in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by Kingston University and the University of Kent. In 2012 he was curator of the International Architecture Exhibition of the XIII Venice Biennale, under the motto Common Ground. He has been an architecture mentor for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative 2016-17. In 2017 he created the RIA Foundation, a private non-profit entity that works for significant economic, environmental and cultural development in Galicia, Spain.

David Chipperfield has published numerous articles and books, including On Planning – A Thought Experiment (2018), a publication that explores and theorizes about the urban qualities of contemporary development. In 2020 he was the guest editor of the Italian design magazine Domus.
