描述
Bringing together material published on the Portuguese architect duo of Aires Mateus from 2002 until the present, this special volume features more than 40 exemplary buildings and projects. From the Lisbon Central Library and Santa Maria Lighthouse Museum, to an Islamic Centre in Bordeaux, multipurpose building in Dubai, Santo Tirso call centre, thermal baths in Serra da Estrela, and numerous residences and homes, it covers a broad range of scales and typologies. In addition, the publication includes two interviews with Aires Mateus by fellow architects Ricardo Carvalho (RCJV Arquitectos) and Emilio Tuñón, and essays by Juan Antonio Cortés and Luis Martínez Santamaría.
Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus were born in Lisbon in 1963 and 1964. They also graduated from Faculdade de Arquitectura / U.T.L with one year difference in 1986 and 1987 respectively. They started collaborating with the Architect Gonçalo Byrne in 1983 and started developing their own projects as authors in 1988. The office Aires Mateus was established independently although it was housed in Gonçalo Byrne’s studio in the first years.
The increasing scale of work made them establish a larger and autonomous space to fulfill the demands. Since then the scale and the amount of projects have been prolific, resulting in several national and international awards. The visibility of their work has made them being invited and accepting lecturing and teaching at several institutions like the Graduate School of Design in Harvard, The Accademia di Architettura in Mendrísio as well as several others in Portugal. The structure right now spans through two studios both based in Lisbon, having several partnerships with local studios for international works.
