Why building has to become easier

Is it even possible to reduce costs and increase quality at the same time in the construction industry? Or to put it another way: What affordable solutions are there for long-lasting and sustainable buildings – for rooms in which we enjoy spending time and the next generations are likely to as well?

We are starting the new year with a difficult topic that will keep us busy for some time to come. The housing shortage in Germany is currently getting worse due to the crisis in the construction industry. The traffic light government promised 400,000 new apartments per year when it took office two years ago. But she cannot keep this promise. There are many reasons for this, one of which is obvious: building is too expensive. But how to reduce costs without sacrificing quality? What possibilities do simple solutions offer?

In this issue, our editor Barbara Zettel has put together groundbreaking projects for you that have taken on these challenges. They are buildings with convincing architecture that reduce costs through simple solutions and still stand for quality. For a better comparison, we have stated the construction costs per square meter – the architectural offices provided us with the figures. Of course, these costs must be assessed in relative terms, depending on the country and building complexity. In Switzerland, for example, construction costs have to be assessed differently than in Spain, and they are higher for public buildings than for manageable single-family homes.

We wish you a good start into the new year and look forward to having you back!
