Juried by the Aging Design Research Program of the American Institute for Architectural Research and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging.
This volume presents forty-seven jury-selected projects representing state-of-the-art continuing care retirement communities, assisted living facilities, independent apartments, nursing facilities, a dementia care unit, a fitness and therapeutic center, and several combined use facilities.
An exciting, diverse range of projects is represented, illustrating how some of the country’ s most forward-thinking architects tackle difficulties posed by institutional attitudes, large-scale building programs, and unyielding regulatory requirements. Smaller unit clusters reduce the scale of many of the projects, while others have capitalized on unusual site features, rather than rebuilding the site. The jury chose the projects included here for how they address these issues, making this volume a window into the concerns involved in designing for the aging at the end of the twentieth century.
