The endless debate on modernity in the world of architecture also changes not only the appearance of ‘modernity’ but also the meaning of the word. We communicate by adding several layers of semantic networks to the words exchanged by Western architects. Kim Seok-cheol is aiming for the localization of modernity and the universalization of history in Korean architectural history. However, he does not believe in the alienation of artists who close their hearts and become autistic in a cold, closed room in front of cold modernity. He believes that an era is just an era, and that the work of an architect is to embrace the era and transcend civilization. He believes in the warmth of people’s lives that is passed down through history, and he tries to block the spread of alienation that tries to close coldly through architecture. He continues to do such gestures with all his heart that anyone based on recent Western education would naturally think is acceptable. In that sense, he is classic and transcends the era from the past to the future.
세계 건축계에서 끊임없이 이어지는 근대 논쟁도 이곳에서는 ‘근대’의 외형뿐 아니라 말뜻부터 달라진다. 서구 건축가들이 주고 받는 말들에 우리는 몇겹의 의미망을 덧씌워 소통한다. 김석철은 한국 건축사에서 근대의 토착화와 동시에 역사의 보편화를 노리고 있다. 그러나 차가운 근대성 앞에 가슴을 닫고 서늘한 밀실로 자폐하는 예술가의 소외는 믿지 않는다. 시대는 시대일 뿐 건축가의 일은 시대를 끌어 안으며 문명을 넘나드는 것이라고 믿는다. 그는 역사를 넘어서 전해지는 사람들의 삶의 뜨거움을 믿으며, 차갑게 닫히려는 소외의 만연을 건축으로 막으려 한다. 최근의 서구 교육을 바탕으로 하고 있는 이라면 당연히 무방하다고 할 그런 몸짓을 그는 혼신을 다해 계속하고 있다. 그런 의미에서 그는 고전적이며 과거로 미래로 시대를 넘는다.
