80 designs by American architects, originally published in 1905 and revised in 1915. Do you love bungalows? You’ll want this vintage facsimile. Although the bungalow is of Anglo-Indian origin, the type of house occupied by Europeans in India, it may well be the typical American house of the twentieth century. The bungalow features roof overhangs with decoratively treated exposed rafters, multiple porches or verandas and a generally open plan. The style, with its characteristic plan, was imported initially for vacation or summer houses, but its suitability to outdoor living quickly led to its adoption for year-round use in the south and west. In William P. Comstock, the editor of “Architecture and Building”, gathered the designs of thirty-two architects. Elevations, photographs, and plans of bungalows in all parts of the country are included, along with a treatise on the style of CE Schermerhorn, a respected domestic architect in Philadelphia. The book covers siting, sanitation materials, color, furnishings, and design of the bungalow, and it stresses the openness and healthfulness of the plan.
