This volume presents 30 awarded and shortlisted projects representative of the vast urban and architectural reflection that emerges annually at the workshops of Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). The proposals are as yet incomplete or unfinished, and serve to generate discussion in hopes of providing innovative analysis that is capable of changing our worldview. They are also highly diverse, from wood charcoal baths and the redevelopment of abandoned industrial silos, to a public infrastructure to reconnect the 9th Ward in New Orleans, and a quick and flexible, demountable system for sheltering palaeontology excavation sites.

Exhibition of student projects in architecture
The students have submitted to the contest a total of ninety-five projects. Among them, seventeen have been triumphantly selected for the ‘Best Of’ and developed over four pages in this book. A further thirteen projects have raised important questions for the jury and were assigned a place of honour in the pre-selection list. Thirty projects in all have convinced the jury and are invited to defend themselves on these pages. They represent a sample of the vast architectural reflections that take place annually in the EPFL studios.
