Architecture is certainly construction, but it is a construction which manifests in itself, at the same time as its simple material presence, the principles which underlie it. Beyond the material, beyond the immediate function, beyond the forms or materials used, expensive or not, we can guess the principles of constructive, social, aesthetic organization, we taste the presence of ideas, rules or concepts that are expressed in depth. We know that gravity is at work in all constructions, but those that more accurately distribute the masses in relation to the supports make its existence felt. The architect’s dream is that any act of construction, public development, reconversion or renovation becomes an act of architecture. “Proportions cost nothing”, said Le Corbusier. They are the culmination of a broader reflection that integrates all the parameters and all the constraints, none of which should ever discourage us.
