a+u’s February issue features award-winning American architect Thomas Phifer. As seen in the 10 houses and 12 cultural buildings examined here, Phifer’s work engages with the landscape in a manner that is deeply respectful, yet asserts its presence. Whether situated in a pastoral meadow or an urban setting, the buildings do not dominate their surroundings but strike a balance. This contextually sensitive dialogue between building and landscape extends beyond formal expression of the building to its environmental performance. In the operable sunshades in Taghkanic House, the thick concrete eaves overhanging the ephemeral walls of Hudson Valley House III, and the complexly multilayered canopy of Moody Amphitheater, the quiet contemplative quality of Phifer’s work emerges from a scientific understanding of site, climate, and light.

『a+u』2月号は、数々の受賞歴を誇るアメリカ人建築家、トーマス・ファイファーを特集する。本号で紹介する住宅10作品と文化施設12作品に見られるように、ファイファーの作品は、風景に深い敬意を払いながらも、確かな存在感を表す。牧歌的な草原に建とうと、都市環境に建とうと、建築が周囲を支配することなく、環境との調和を保っている。こうした建築と風景との文脈に配慮した対話は、形式的表現にとどまらず、環境性能にまで及ぶ。タカニックの住宅における可動式の日除け、ハドソン・ヴァレーの住宅Ⅲで薄いガラス壁を覆う厚いコンクリートの庇、あるいはムーディ・アンフィシアターの多層的なキャノピーに見られるように、ファイファーの建築が湛える静謐で内省的な質は、敷地、気候、光にたいする科学的理解から立ち現れている。（編）
