a+u’s January issue features Vector Architects, founded by Gong Dong in 2008. From its earliest projects, the Beijing-based firm has prioritized the relationship of built work to its site, from ocean, to mountains, to the heart of the city, while investigating both natural and artificial landmarks for clues on how best to address the unique requirements of each program. While Gong Dong is no stranger to bold gestures, as evidenced by Seashore Chapel in Qinhuangdao, recent work, such as Jingyang Camphor Court in Jingdezhen, seems to retreat from view, knitting itself into the urban fabric until structure and surroundings become inseverable. While material continues to be critical to their capture and play of light, Vector Architects’ resolution to preserve nature, such as their decision to make 18-meter trees the nucleus of Liyuan Primary School in Shenzhen, attests to their ability to grasp the genius loci of their site. 『a+u』1月号は、2008年にドン・ゴン（董功）によって設立された直向建築（ヴェクター・アーキテクツ）を特集する。北京を拠点とする事務所は、初期のプロジェクトから、建設された作品と敷地との関係性、すなわち海から山へ、そして都市の中心部へと至るまでの関係性を最優先し、各プログラム固有の要求に最善で対処するための手がかりを、自然および人工のランドマークの両方に探求している。海辺の礼拝堂（秦皇島市）に見られるように、大胆なジェスチャーとは無縁ではないが、近年のジンヤン・キャンファー・コート（景徳鎮）のような作品では、視界から退くことで、都市の文脈に自らを編み込み、不可分なものとしている。素材が光をとらえ、光と戯れるための重要な要素であり続ける一方で、ヴェクター・アーキテクツの自然を保存する決意、例えば、18mの木々を荔園外国語小学校（深圳）の核とする決定は、彼らが敷地固有の精神を把握する能力の証左である。（編）
