In her forword to the book Mine Kazmaoğlu, the editor of Architectural Yearbook 2: Architecture in Turkey 2004, writes the following:
”A general answer as to the fuction of the Yearbook may be that it puts together a selection of buildings that are out of the ‘ordinary’ within the geography they belong to. However, as limited space does not permit inclusion of the entire body of works selected, the selection committee presents the public with a further refined selection of the products they regard as non-mediocre.
The procedure is in two steps. First, the non-mediocre structures are identified, then a smaller group among these are further set aside to appear in the Yearbook. However, a provision is made to present to the public those designs in the first selection group that do not appear in the Yearbook itself.
As a result of the refinement process, consecutively 121 and 117 structures out of the 313 applications sent from 32 provinces in the first term (1998-2000), and the 255 sent from 34 provinces in the second term (2000-2004), were set aside to appear on the Mimtoloji site. A total of 37 buildings of the first group and 51 of the second also appear in the respective Yearbooks.
Maximum effort was put into presenting all entries in equal substance. In the Yearbook, the drawings were revised to bring them to standard. All photographs that appear in the Yearbook and most of those in Mimtoloji were taken by Cemal Emden. In doing so we have aimed at a certain neutrality by presenting the buildings through the view of the same eye.”
