描述

Indian architecture today faces an unprecedented challenge – to accommodate the disparate realities of an agrarian economy, an increasingly urbanised middle class and an exploding population. All segments of this population need places to live and work; and to provide them is a daunting task. The dimensions of the task can truely be gauged when one realises that India invests more in newconstruction today than all the Arab nations together at the height of their prosperity. Contemporary Indian Architecture surveys the current scence, assessing the nature of the challenge and analysing how it is being met. The first volume in the series, After The Masters, deals with the work of some 20 architects—those at the top of the profession and other lesser-known practitioners, many of whom are using innovative approaches to the problems of today.

Vikram Bhatt is an associate professor of architecture at McGill University in Montreal. A native of Gujarat, he maintains active links with India through the programme and field projects of the McGill Minimum Cost Housing Group of which he is director. Bhatt has published numerous papers and studies in the field of human settlements.

Peter Scriver completed his formal architectural training in 1984. He travelled to Asia on a post-graduate fellowship and undertook his professional apprenticeship in India. He has subsequently taught and practiced architecture in Montreal. Scriver is currently writing a dissertation on architecture and conceptual change in 19th and 20th century India, as a doctoral candidate of the Delft University of Technology.
