描述
This handsome volume documents a recent exhibition (March-May 1989) held at the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt. Drawing from the museum’s impressive collection, Klotz has assembled what amounts to an international survey of 20th-century architecture in drawings, models, books, and furniture. While the book contains work by such proven masters as Wright, Kahn, and Le Corbusier, it focuses on lesser-known designers, including Bela Kadar, Koloman Moser, and Rob Krier. Each illustration is fully annotated, complete with bibliographic references. An introductory essay by the author provides a concise overview of the major trends in 20th-century architecture. A useful reference for serious students of architecture.
20th Centrury Architecture presents an international survey of recent architectural history based on the permanent collection of the German Architecture Museum built up during the last ten years under the direction of Heinrich Klotz. No other existing collection offers such a comprehensive reconstruction of the architectural history of this century, and the selection of drawings, sketches, models, books and furniture provides a vivid illustration of not only the outstanding achievements of those who shaped events such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, but also the work of little-knownarchitects which frequently gives expression to common goals. The scope of the curvey extends from the Expressionism of Poelzig, Taut and Mendelson, through the Classic and International Style phases of Modernism to the emergence in recent years of Post-Modernism and Deconstruction ans Second Modernism of today. It includes delicate colour renderings, detailed blueprints, forceful charcoal sketches, presentation drawings, colour photographs of models, exteriors, interiors and furniture. Works by architects are chronologically presented, including Wright, Gropius, Mies, Le Corbusier, Kahn, Rossi, Moore, Meier, Isozaki and Hadid among many others. Reproduced are some of the most influential and dramatic designs of each architect, as well as many of their least frequently published, but no less important, works and drawings. Beautifully illustrated with over 400 items in colour, the book also contains a useful reference section containing biographies of the architects featured. The result is a refreshingly new look at the dynamic developments in architecture over the past ninety years.
Professor Heinrich Klotz is Director of the German Architecture Museum, Frankfurt-am-Main and is author of New York Architecture, 1970-1990 to be published by Rizzoli, 1989.
